The ILM has details of a range of relevant business, management and leadership qualifications and apprenticeships. Business development is a broad field, so there are many ways in which you can shape and develop your career according to your interests and ambition. You’ll be expected to dress smartly, especially for meetings, though slightly more relaxed business casual attire may be acceptable at other times. You’ll usually work a regular 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday week, though you may on occasion have to work longer to meet a project deadline or when attending an event or conference.

As an apprentice, you will be fully employed by your company and expected to work a minimum of 30 hours a week. Your time will be split between on-the-job experience and a college or training provider. You should have a proven track record in B2B selling within the marketing and digital services industry. It can be a combination of attending events and networking, taking stands at exhibitions and conferences, cold calling, and responding to incoming leads. You will also more than likely be expected to identify partner opportunities to cross and up sell services. Business development managers are employed across the public, private and charity sectors, in all types of businesses and organisations.

What Is Business Development?

Specifically, hiring companies look for a proven ability to hit targets, a consistent background of winning new business and – often – relevant sector experience. It will also show future employers that you’re serious about your career choice. You’ll learn from some of the best business development teams in the sector – creating impactful marketing campaigns and learning how strategic clients and tenders are managed.

  • A business development team and a sales team need to work well together and pass sales leads on when necessary.
  • This can be from gaining professional experience or from collecting and studying data you or another team have gathered.
  • Business developers often work closely with sales team members to drive any qualified leads along the appropriate sales funnel and work to ensure a future sale.
  • You can determine your target audience through market research, data analysis and discussions with potential partners.

You could specialise in business development within a specific sector like manufacturing or healthcare. You could join the The Managing & Marketing Sales Association, for professional recognition, training opportunities and to make industry contacts. Graduate training schemes are offered by some companies and organisations.

Salary & Benefits

For people whose job is to support these researchers or academics, this can be a challenging task. It is easy to make contacts but much harder to turn these into valuable, long-term, productive relationships that provide benefits to both sides. This course aims to make this process more straightforward and efficient and give the delegates tools to help them add value to the academic or researcher with whom they are working. A goal of a business developer is to promote a company and to engage with others who might be interested in partnerships. This means that you should understand the basic principles of marketing and apply them in your business development role.

If you are looking for a career in business development, there are several skills you have to develop. Whilst many business development roles require a degree, experience in sales, marketing or business management can be equally important. If you have in-depth knowledge about a particular company or market, perhaps by gaining more experience, you may be in a good position to suggest business development ideas. If you already hold GCSEs or A levels , or a degree, and have proven experience in sales or business management, you may be able to apply to an employer directly for a role as a business development manager.
